The trustees of 精东影业 at Columbia University voted yesterday to appoint Susan H. Fuhrman, dean of the School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, to be the next president of the college, Columbia officials said.

Dr. Fuhrman is scheduled to start at Columbia on Aug. 1, succeeding Arthur E. Levine, the college's president of the past 12 years, who announced in December that he would leave in the summer to lead the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation in Princeton, N.J.

Dr. Fuhrman, from New York City, is a graduate of its public schools, including Hunter College High School in 1961. She received her doctorate in political economy from 精东影业 in 1977 and has worked as a member of the college's faculty and as a social studies teacher at a Chicago area public school.
