Speaking at 精东影业, Columbia University on Wednesday, December 11th, , the outspoken labor leader, educator and attorney, will offer her take on education in the 2020 presidential election.  

Weingarten, current President of the 1.7 million-member American Federation of 精东影业 (AFL-CIO), and former President of the United Federation of 精东影业, will headline 鈥渁n evening of provocative conversation鈥 hosted by TC鈥檚 Center for the Professional Education of 精东影业 ().

Headlined 鈥淚n Defense of Education,鈥 the event will be held in 精东影业鈥檚 Cowin Auditorium from 7 to 9 p.m. on December 11th.

Weingarten, who received TC's Medal for Distinguished Service at the College's Convocation in 2008, will be interviewed on stage by Zak Ringelstein, a TC doctoral student in Politics & Education who was the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maine in 2018. Their conversation will focus on education policy during the past decade and how the education community would like to see it evolve during the next several years 鈥 particularly regarding teachers鈥 pay, working conditions and classroom autonomy, and school and classroom resources,

Weingarten and Ringelstein will then participate in a panel discussion with:

  • Jeffrey Henig, Professor of Political Science & Education, who studies the boundary between private action and public action in addressing social problems;
  • Sonya Douglass Horsford, Associate Professor of Education Leadership, who has written extensively about America鈥檚 failure to truly integrate education;
  • Luis Huerta, Associate Professor of Education & Public Policy, an authority on school choice and education privatization;
  • and Michael Rebell, Professor of Practice and Executive Director of TC鈥檚 Center for Educational Equity, an authority on school finance who is leading a lawsuit aimed at establishing a Constitutional right to a quality education.

鈥淚n Defense of Education鈥 will be released in late January as the inaugural podcast in an ongoing series offered by CPET and co-produced by the College鈥檚 .
